Russia is known for its great traditions of art collecting. Between 1700 and 1917, when the Revolution changed everything, more than three hundred significant art collections were created here.
The Empress Catherine the Great played a key role in establishing this trend. Her honourable successors included Savva Morozov, Savva Mamontov, Peter Shchukin, Sergei Tretyakov, Alexander Stroganov and a number of great Russian collectors, who were recognized both in Russia and abroad.
